India Plans Fresh Bid to Ban JeM

New Delhi: India might recalibrate its efforts in the UN for action against terror masterminds based in Pakistan, including JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar, depending on the outcome of separate meetings between Indian and Chinese foreign ministres as well as National Security Advisers this week. These meetings where India will reiterate its position on demanding ban on Azhar under 1267 UN sanctions committee and urge Beijing to overturn its veto at the Security Council will be key in shaping India’s future strategy in UN on terror & fugitives, senior officials told ET speaking on the condition of anonymity. Both Swaraj and Doval would ask China to join global mainstream in fighting terror, officials pointed out.

While foreign minister Sushma Swaraj meets her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Moscow in the early part of the week on the sidelines of the Russia-India-China (RIC) trilateral, NSA Ajit Doval travels to Beijing for strategic dialogue with China over the next weeked. Swaraj may also raise the issue of Masood Azhar at the RIC forum, sources indicated. Officials pointed out that China’s position on the issue of Azhar and other Pak-based terrorists and fugitives would be a major contributing factor in India’s strategy in UN where Beijing has twice used veto India’s effort to ban the JeM chief.LIKE
