Virginia: Ashley Guindon, who was sworn in on Friday, had just returned to policing after leaving the force a few years ago. Ms Guindon, from the Prince William County Police Department, was killed and two other officers injured during a confrontation between a suspected gunman and police in Lake Ridge. A photo had been posted on Twitter on Friday of Ms Guindon and a fellow officer after they were sworn-in, and telling them to “be safe”.
The message said: “Welcome Officers Steven Kendall & Ashley Guindon who were sworn in today & begin their shifts this weekend. Be safe!”
It was not known if the other officer in the tweet was involved in the shooting.
Officer Guindon was killed on Saturday after a phone call to police about a “verbal argument” in Woodbridge, about 30 miles southwest of Washington, said a police spokesman. The department announced on its Facebook page that Officer Guindon had died from injuries she suffered in the shooting. It put a photo on Twitter of a patrol car with flowers on the bonnet as a tribute to the policewoman.
A message read: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. #RIPAshleyGuindon.” A civilian also died in the domestic dispute, according to Corey Stewart, chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors. The condition of the wounded officers was not known. The suspect, a military serviceman, is in custody and was not injured. Ms Guindon had been a county police officer a few years ago and had left and returned to the force, said Mr Stewart. He said he did not know the exact dates of when she started and left.
