Friday Fitness Fix: Spring!

Spring! – complete with exclamation mark – at Grace Belgravia gym bases its workout around a springboard that is vertically attached to the end of a reformer pilates machine. An evolution of a mat-based workout, this invokes the key tenets of the pilates philosophy, focusing on posture, alignment, core strength and elongated limbs and blends it with some man-made machinery. Sounds fun? Well it is, quite.

The majority of the class is spent lying on your back and concentrating on maintaining a neutral spine whilst repeating a series of movements. We began by simply propelling up and down the carriage whilst aiming to position feet at different angles on the spring board. Sounds simple, but simplicity can be deceptive.

A muscular workout is intensified by straightening legs and pointing toes between each propulsion and adding more resistance to the reformer machine. Small differences in placement and direction are critical and surprisingly exhausting – the principle of this class is in using the rebound energy so that muscles exert maximum force in short intervals in order to increase stamina and muscle power – known as plyometric exercise. It’s clever and effective, but it’s bearable. This is a perfect class for those who prefer a core workout without breaking a sweat. Spring! is more about the two-day muscle ache than the burn in class.
