Earth System Model to be Ready By 2017

T’puram: the Earth System Model (ESM), which will prove a handy tool for predicting monsoon patterns and understanding regional level climate change, will be ready by 2017, top official of the ministry of earth science (MoES), and government of India, have said.

This high resolution climate model is being created by the center for climate change research (CCC) at the Indian institute of tropical meteorology (IITM),pune , and is the first of its kind in the country.

‘’It will be ready by next year and the model result will be published in the report of the inter-governmental panel on climate change (IPCC),” moes secretary m Rajeev an told ‘express’ on thesidelines of the national space science symposium (NSSS) which began at the vikram sarabhi space centre (VSSC) on Tuesday.

Developed with the aid of high- performance computers, the model is expected to g a long way in helping Indian scientists understand   regional-level complexities climate change and how it impacted sectors such as agriculture, health and water resources. The ESM will help to crate projections of the future monsoon climate. Also, it will prove useful in generating a knowledge base foe detecting and understanding observed change in the climate caused by natural and man-made effects.
