Thiruvanthapuram: Diabetics is a major and most common body abnormality nowadays. India needs to educate its primary level general physicians about diabetic care so that the rising cases can be brought down, said In ternational Diabetes Federation president Dr Shaukat Sadikot. Such general physicians are the ones who meet a large number of patients. Hence, they should be taught to detect diabetes and prevent it from becoming a giant killer, he added. “The International Diabetes Federation will soon be Diabetes an online School of Diabetes with an aim to educate general physicians in rural areas.
We intend to begin a six month certificate course for the doctors. The school will also provide general awareness on the disease to the common man.” Said Dr Shaukat who was in the city for a talk. We don’t need more consultants to address the issue. Instead, we should train the general physicians on how to detect diabetes at the initial stages, he added.
The International Diabetes Federation will have a dialougue with the Centre on this and also on the steps to be taken to bring down the cost of diabetic treatment which is becoming costly. Detection of diabetes at the initial stage is important since latest studies have found that one out of three patients undergoing dialysis have been found to be diabetic.
